SEFA (The Scientific Furniture Association) gives out yearly the 'Laboratory of the Year' award as a recognition of the efforts made by a team of architects, laboratory directors and project-managers, manufacturers, suppliers and developers in planning and constructing a laboratory building or a building complex. The winner of this award exceeds in all categories, from the execution terms, to the incorporation of sustainable energies, materials and technologies and comes up with innovative ideas, exceeding the client's expectations.
Unique not only from a visual and aesthetic point of view, these buildings accomplish new concepts of functionality. They have been projected and designed from the smallest details: using sustainable materials to diminish the costs, planning the layout and design in a safe and welcoming way and incorporating the mechanical, electrical and ventilation utilities. The laboratories come with solutions to existing problems: making a modern environment with the latest cutting-edge equipments to maximise the productivity. All these are the done by an entire team of experts, working with and for visionary clients.
This year, the award is given to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation - The Rockefeller University River Campus. . Situated in Manhattan, New York City, over East Side River and has 2 buildings: Marie-Joséeande Henry R. Kravis Research Building. Architect Joy Barman (Rafel Viñloy Architects) planned a 5 story building, with the laboratories concentrated in two floors, as requested by the university. The University of Rockefeller considers collaboration a key element in scientific development, which is facilitated in this case through 'flowing', open-space laboratories, encouraging the colleagues to interact.
We deeply congratulate those involved in this project, all the participants and the SEFA jury. It was a pleasure to visit the new campus in November 2018, during the 30th Annual SEFA Meeting & Trade Show.
